If you work in a school—or if you are a parent with a kid in school, you have until February 6 to apply for a grant from Scholastic and Welch’s that will bring a garden—complete with tools, seeds, and educational materials for the kids—to your school.

The restrictions are simple: any U.S. classroom K-8 with at least 15 students that will use the garden to teach students about nutrition and sustainable agriculture. The gardens can be indoor or outdoor which can be a benefit for those that don’t have outdoor space available.  Two schools will be selected from each state, and the top 5 winners will receive a $1,000 package; 25 winners will receive a $500 package; and 70 winners will receive a package valued at $250, all of which will be distributed in April 2010—just in time for the growing season!

As a bonus, Welch’s teaches you the educational benefits of gardening—ranging from the physical activity involved to the math of estimating growth time and graphing out plots, to lessons in health and community service.
